Re: Barrel Brews: 2016 Kegging & 2017 Transfer
Is this the complete list of 2016 brewers? 11 and with Lancasters out now only 10?
Jeremy, Lancasters, JAM, Purcell, Jordan, Sky, Wuertz, Norrick, Gonzalez, Heisler, Ferrel
Here's what I propose...We keg 5 gal for Bourbon Society first, then 10 gal for OVHA events & meetings (I have extra kegs and cold storage) which leaves 40 gal for 10 brewers, so 4 gal each - does that work? I suppose we can use one of Jeff's scales to meter the drawoff...8lbs x 4 gal = 32 lbs, right? Should we keg some for J. Mills & Jeff? If it's good, I'd love for Jeff to have some to sell but I think there are legal issue with that right? thoughts? Do we have the fittings Jeff needs for the CO2 push method?
Then...before putting the 2017 brew in, I think we should put in warm/hot water to cleanse/rinse the barrel. Can we turn it to dump the water with gravity only? Or do we need to use CO2 to push the water out? Thoughts?

Re: Barrel Brews: 2016 Kegging & 2017 Transfer
Steve brewed that day as well.
I do like the idea of getting the event kegs filled first. I'm thinking that we could probably bottle some off for John and Jeff after some is carbonated. I seriously doubt it can be sold, but it was brewed within the confines of a brewery, so... maybe there's a chance?
I think we need a plan to dump it, there are probably bits of char that could clog our line if we try and push it out with C02

Re: Barrel Brews: 2016 Kegging & 2017 Transfer
Perhaps we should fill all kegs with 4 gal from the start? Between evaporation, barrel absorption, and samples that have been/will be pulled, I'm afraid the last man up is going to get shorted...
53 gal is 13.25 (4) gal kegs. However we know there won't be 53 gal actually in the barrel due to the losses above. So if there are 11 Brewers, 1 for Bourban Society, and 2 for events, that would be 14 (4) gal kegs...Right?

Re: Barrel Brews: 2016 Kegging & 2017 Transfer
We should just fill less than 4 gal for the brewers.
The other 2 kegs are being filled specifically for the club to bring to events, so they should be filled to capacity. EBS gets 5 as part of loaning the barrel.
I wouldn't consider half to 3/5 of a keg as a bad deal for anyone.

In the spirit of this generosity, Superior Ag literally donated all of the ingredients for the 2016 project. Should we give them a keg too? I suppose we pay them back with our business actually.

The understanding was that we would display their name with the beer when we serve it at events.Jam095 wrote:This coming from an EBS board memberwuertzBräu wrote:We should just fill less than 4 gal for the brewers.

Re: Barrel Brews: 2016 Kegging & 2017 Transfer
True, but that was part of the deal. The EBS board voted to let OVHA use their barrel, in exchange for a keg that we'd use to structure an EBS member event around, to which the OVHA board agreed to. The 5 gallon keg represents a 5.5 oz pour for each of our current paid members.Jam095 wrote:This coming from an EBS board member
Superior Ag got naming rights for the beer (at events) when they made the donation. At least that is the deal I remember us making with them at the time.Jam095 wrote:In the spirit of this generosity, Superior Ag literally donated all of the ingredients for the 2016 project. I'm not sure how to give a keg Superior Ag anyway. Probably best to bottle up a six pack and give to our contact.
And I forgot to consider losses so yeah, start with 5 gal for EBS, 10 gal for OVHA, then 3.5 gal for each brewer.

I thought of the logistics too. After the points were made, I don't think it's necessary anyway. And I agree, even 3 gal is plenty fair. It used to be everyone donate 1/2 keg to an event. This makes a lot more sense.ThreeBeers wrote:I'm not sure how to give a keg Superior Ag anyway. Probably best to bottle up a six pack and give to our contact.

Wasn't "half" supposed to go to club? Like big brew.

We don't have enough events for everyone to bring their keg of the club beer. In the past there were only a few brewers that would bring the barrel beer anyway. This ensures that club has beer to serve and everyone is donating. I think it's a great idea.

"March of the Kegs"
Each spring the empty keglings begin their slow march to the nutritious waters of the mother barrel. It is a long and arduous journey. Made all the more difficult since the kegs have been emptied of their contents for far too long and are light and weak now containing only carbon dioxide. Each is in desperate need for a refill of the dark and flavorful life sustaining elixir. As the kegs approach their final destination they naturally form a queue line and each take their turn sipping from the generous hose. But beware. There is danger in the air. The mother barrel has become agitated. Without constant attention she will blow her bung cutting off the supply forcing many kegs to go empty. Doomed to wither and die. Fortunately dedicated volunteers come in to assist in the filling. They take special care to keep the mother barrel happy with gentle pressure and a firm hand. At last, each keg gets its fill and wanders off to the far reaches of southern Indiana in search of a cool dark place to rest before the next year's journey.

At least we know for next time not to bring a keg with pin locks. Next year I'll be prepared.
