Anyone know about refrigeration?

Post by Chris Alvey » Thu Mar 24, 2011 1:05 pm

So, I did a(nother) stupid thing. I saw a kegerator on Craigslist and was able to talk them down from their original price. I was assured that it worked, etc. etc. Long story short when I got there the situation was not such that it was the time nor the place to demand to see it work so I just packed it up and got out.

Of course, as you might guess, when I got home I found that the thing turns on but does not cool. I texted the seller and he said he has some refrigerant but I slept on it and told him that I just wanted my money back. I haven't heard from him since and doubt I will. It's not worth the money to take to small claims really either.

SO, I am the not-so-proud owner an older kegerator that appears to need coolant. I'm guessing it's the 'bad' kind of coolant that costs a lot of money to replace (maybe?) Without throwing good money after bad and having someone come out, does anyone have any knowledge about this sort of thing?

Thanks

Chris

I had a freezer I turned into a 10 tap keezer. After completing the custom wood collar and finishing the whole thing off to resemble a mahogany masterpiece, it too wouldn't cool. I spent money on a service call fir a repairman, which was seconded by our own refrigeration guru Don Heisler. If it needs a recharge, it means it has a leak. A leak on the old systems is a death sentence. Do like I did and strip off the parts you can use and set it next to the street for the scrappers to pick up.
You gonna buy one, or be one?

By the way, my dad is a retired heating and air man so I have a tank of the old refrigerant (Freon R-12) in my garage. Your welcome to use it but don't tell the Feds!

I have an electronic leak finder. We might find a fixable leak but, usually,a new evaporator is needed. We may find one reasonably priced and,if so,I can install it for about a beer or so.Of course,we need to know why it isn't cooling first...could be something simple.

Small refer. systems is my specialty.
You gonna stop whinin' 'bout that beer,or you gonna send it to me?
