Kayak/Canoe Trip to Land Between the Lakes: Thur-Sun

Post by Chris Norrick » Thu May 06, 2010 8:48 am

I'm planning a longer kayak/canoe trip along the Kentucky Lake shoreline of LBL. My initial plans are to drop off the boats at the Nickell Branch boat ramp near the Barkley Canal. Take the vehicles to the Smith Bay boat ramp. Return to Nickell Branch with one vehicle and kayak to the trucks parked at Smith Bay. Load up and pick up the single vehicle at Nickell Branch on our way north to home. We could always do a loop to save on all that trouble.

I'm thinking this would be a Thursday-Sunday trip.

There is a backcountry camping fee of $5 for 3 days or $20 annually: http://www.lbl.org/CAMPBackCountry.html

Here is a topo map of the area. LARGE 7mb DOWNLOAD!

This plan is up for discussion. Dates are TBD.

I have a wenonah canoe and nice canvas tent. I'd love to join in some day. But I heard the lakes were closed for recreational until Monday due to flooding. You better double check.

Yes, the lakes are closed until May 11 I believe. The dates for this trip are TBD.

I would really like to do this, reminds me of the week we would spend on the lake in Ill at the Lake of Egypt when I worked at Ondessonk.
BUT this year I have no days off left, because of my trip to Europe this summer.

Count me in. My vacation time is pretty flexible; just a couple of weeks notice is all I need.

Sounds like a good time... keep me posted and I'll try and get the time off.
