Well, I finally got my rhizomes in the ground Sunday 5/3. Single row, that is 45 ft long, containing 6 varieties (Cascade, Centenial, Chinook, Horizon, Nugget, Santium), 13 rhizomes total. Same type rhizomes spaced 3 ft apart, 5 ft spacing between different varieties. If they all come up, I"ll be really suprized. I'd be happy with 1/2 coming up this year.

Only 11 days since planting 13 rhizomes...all have at least 1 shoot out of the ground. I wasn't expecting 100% especially since Thyme Garden put 3 Cascade rhizomes in the bag when I ordered only 2. I'm sure they thought one of them wouldn't make it because they were all very thin short sticks. The best of the lot has been the Centenials..followed by Chinook, and Horizon (I'm not sad the high alpha's are doing so good).

You are right they are pretty well fatal to dogs. however from everything I've read dogs are generally uninterested in the hops plants and cones.
The problem comes in with what you decide to do with your spent hops after a brew session. Since the hops are covered in sweet wort, dogs are extremely likely to eat them.
I did a lot of research on it before planting my hops sinc eI have a dog that will eat damn near anything.

Here is my support system I put up today. Some 2 foot rebar stakes I bent over and some hook eyes behind the gutters. This is the south wall of the garage/brewery.

Only one of the cascade made it (I replanted the other 5 but late so they are not doing so well 3 of them have sprouted, but the other two appear dead.) The one doing well is 6' tall though.

Willamette going strong. 4 out of 6 are over four feet.
