Make Homebrew Great Again Ideas
As mentioned in the Jan email, I want to rekindle the spirit of home brewing this year. We have some ideas but want to solicit inputs from you. What have you seen or read about that other clubs do? What do you want to do? Experiment with various ingredients and compare? This topic is for you to share ideas on how to Make Homebrew Great Again!

Re: Make Homebrew Great Again Ideas
A few ideas to marinate on:
- "From one wort, many beers" project
(This was discussed in the latest Zymurgy issue--big batch of wort is created, whoever wants to participate gets 5 gallons, takes it home, works the rest of the magic and brings it back for a best of show Comp)
- BJCP based feedback (scoresheet) on Homebrew each meeting to help dial in recipes for competitions--not only making Homebrew great again, but making OVHA Homebrew standout
- Club Brewing Schedule posted on Forum
(When are people brewing to make partner brewing more accessible so we can learn from each other)

I say these are all great ideas!
I especially like posting brewing schedules. I love brewing with others, and it rarely happens unless we have an event.

Great ideas!
To play off of that idea, we could start with an identical base recipe (grains; like you would with a SMaSH but not just using a single malt) and then let each brewer decide on their preferred mash method, mash time/temp, hops, boil additions, yeast, dry hopping, etc.
Then have some type of a best of show at one of the meetings.
Keep the ideas coming!

That sounds fun, but would really only be possible if we partnered with one of the local breweries to produce a large batch of wort - which I would assume could be quite difficult.tAYLOR.bRUMMETT wrote:

Re: Make Homebrew Great Again Ideas
First of all I second:
- "From one wort, many beers" project. It sounds like tons of fun. I think, as it was in Zymurgy, it could be a competition.... just a thought.
- starting a thread on the forum for people to list if they are brewing and willing to have people come over to hang out and learn or try a Co brew. Have equipment, will travel (use plastic fermenter when traveling)
Other ideas:
-i loved the SMASH beer project, but let's turn it into a learning session. Instead let's use the same yeast and hops, using only a bittering hop schedule, but different base malt with the same single infusion temp at 152. This can highlight differences in flavor between pilsner malt to Munich 2.
-what about doing a giant batch brew where everyone makes the same beer but uses different yeast? (Similar to one worth to many beers)
-hop combos? Have one of the expert hop heads talk about how to blend hop varieties, but also we should venture out and make our own two+ hop combo beers. Then share with the club, maybe rate and give feedback?
-make the same beer at 5 different mash temperatures. Can anyone figure out which is which? 145, 148, 152, 158.
In summary, let's make home brew club fun by experimenting! Isn't that half the fun?

I like the hop combos talk idea. Who in our group would be best to discuss this?

Re: Make Homebrew Great Again Ideas
Having just joined the forum and not yet a member but looking like I could contribute this club . One thing I might suggest that most clubs do is hold club competitions not just members but open to non members too it could maybe draw in new members. Also Maybe even battle of the brews with other clubs. Jasper indiana has a club and bloomington has many different clubs that are close

Re: Make Homebrew Great Again Ideas
Damian, thank you for the post and ideas. Our club does not have enough certified judges to host our own open competition but I do like the idea of reaching out to other clubs. Hope you can make our next meeting on February 22 at Germania Mannerchor.

Re: Make Homebrew Great Again Ideas
I recently watched a video on YouTube of a brewer who had trouble diverting from written recipes.
Essentially, he and another brewer both brewed a beer with the same malt bill and hop schedule, but they just had a series of cups that had various styles of hops (name and AA% were on the bottom) and just basically brewed whatever they picked up.
Seemed like a neat idea if anyone was interested.
