Hop Rhizome

How serious do ya's this 'hop shortage'be?Is it gonna be all hops,or just the favorites?"If ya' can't make lemonade...maybe a fresh squeezed orangeade would be mighty tasty.

There are SOME hops that I favor also but I may not have the time to devote to growing them.

I received a rhizome order form from hop union today. They would like orders be in by March 1 & rhizomes available for shipping by March 30. 1-20 rhizomes are $2.50 each. 21-99 rhizomes @ 2.10 each. Prize continues to get lower, but I can't imagine needing more than 99. Varieties available are Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, Fuggle, Glazier, Golding, Hallertau, Horizon, Liberty, Mt Hood, Nugget, Santiam, Sterling, Tettnang & Willamette.

For all the current hop growers in the group.... Hops grow 20-30 ft straight up if supported with some sort of guiding wire, and with trellis systems of all sorts.
Do you think they would grow upside down if the trellis system had their roots higher than the bines? I've got a retaining wall along my drive way that I would love to cover with hops. The problem is that the blacktop runs all the way to the concrete wall preventing any plantings that would resemble normal vertical growth. My hope would be to plant the hops at the top of the wall and train the shoots to grow downward prior to growing horizontally, or just growing down and up making a ziz-zag pattern. Does anybody think this is feasable?

If you use a guide wire, you can train them to spiral it and therefore control where you want them to grow. I think it would be tough to control them if you let them just go free on the wall.

From what I've read it should be possible. It just may take a little TLC every couple of days to make sure they stay on track.

From my experience, last season my cascades grew nearly 20 feet straight up until they run out of twine. At that point they kept growing straight down (dangling on their own with out support) and stopped about five feet from the ground.

The only guidelines I have heard is that hops will not grow well at less than a 45 degree angle, however, some of my hops grew horizontally behind my vinyl siding and came back out about 5 feet later. Hops are crazy! (ain't it great)

I think I'm going to go ahead with the plantings along the wall. Initial feed back (I also belong to a hop growing yahoo group) was it would be too much work training, or can't be done. There was one member that said this zig zag method is how he grows his hops with the exception that his start out growing up, then he zig zags them up and down in a 6 ft vertical pattern spacing the vines 2 ft before training them to go back down. He also said harvesting is much easier because it's simply picking while standing up. My belief was that the hops will follow any support system grid if that is the only support they have.

I got hop rhizomes in the mail this week & played farmer this morning. Planted them in a sunny location along the side of the house. Now the wait!! The rhizomes all had sprouts and appeared to be in good shape. I'll fix up rope for them to grow on later.

Mine are in as well, I just have to get them in the ground. 6 cascade, and 6 willamette.

Changed my mind. i got half planted today and will get the willamette in the ground tomorrow.

The rhizomes from Hop Union are here in Evansville, but UPS doesn't know where. An info notice was left on my door. I tried to have the package held so I could pick it up but the website or phone couldn't find the number on the notice. I left a note on my door to please deliver to Turoni's. When it wasn't delivered to Turoni's I went to UPS and they can't find any record of it. UPS sucks.
