I would like to try my hand at root beer. Anyone have a good recipe they would like to share?
Thanks!

Re: Root Beer Recipe
Great root beer with one bottle of Zatarans mix, five gallons spring water and four pounds brown sugar - then carbonate while cold.
I even have some mix if you want it!

Re: Root Beer Recipe
My tried and true recipe that people seem to love is:
1 bottle Zatarains Rootbeer Extract
7 Cups white sugar
3 Cups brown sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
4 oz maltodextrin
makes 5 gallons. I keg it all

Re: Root Beer Recipe
Thanks! Where to get the extract and maltodextrin? Do you boil it or anything? Or just mix with water and drink?

Re: Root Beer Recipe
How much do you want for the extract? Maybe I could get it from you when I get the temp controller?

Re: Root Beer Recipe
This is the extract I use
http://www.amazon.com/Zatarains-Concent ... er+extract
Ive use both dark and light brown sugar and havent really noticed a difference.
Ive left out the maltodextrin before with no adverse effects, its just used to increase the body, mouth feel, and head retention
I usually boil two gallons and add three gallons of cold water on top of it like I'm doing an extract brew just to melt all the sugar and sanitize it because 5 gallons lasts a long time for us so I dont want it to get funky but I dont think most people do that.

Re: Root Beer Recipe
Best way to carbonate rootbeer? Have had it on 25 psi for several days and is barely carbonated. I did turn up to 35 last night and shook it for a while. But didn't know if would react like beer and just get glasses of foam.

Re: Root Beer Recipe
Brandon, I carbonate at around 30-35 psi at 37 degrees. Even then it seems to take longer than beer to get properly carbonated.Blancaster wrote:Best way to carbonate rootbeer? Re: Root Beer Recipe
I add Maltodextrin when I mix it up for a little head retention. Root beer does seem to take forever to carb.
