Re: Brew-in-a-Bag (BIAB) links
Chris, I just weighed my grains after a BIAB stout today.
Dry Grains = 10.75 pounds
Wet Grains = 14 pounds
Total weight of absorbed water = 3.25 pounds
1 gallon of water = 8.345 pounds
total gallons of absorbed water = 3.25/8.345 = .3894 gallon
gallons of water/lb of grain = .3894/10.75 = .0362
This is much lower than the .125 gallons per pound that is used for a normal mash calculation.
I have seen some BIAB calculators that use .05 gals per pound.
I allowed the bag to drain until it stopped dripping and then squeezed it firmly. I used 1.75 pounds of roasted grains for this batch.( I like my stouts roasty) I don’t think that roasted grains absorb as much as regular grains.

From the weizenbock
Dry Grist = 16.375 lb.
Wet Grist = 22 lb. (on a really crappy old analog fish scale so accuracy is suspect)
Total weight of absorbed water = 5.625 lb
1 gal of water = 8.345 lb
Gallons of absorbed water = .674
Gallons of water/lb of grain = .0412 gal/lb absorption rate
I squeezed it with gloves several times but with that much grain I didn't think I got a good squeeze on it.

Re: Brew-in-a-Bag (BIAB) links
Dearest BIAB gurus,
The largest grain bill that I have done was 12lbs and I am looking at a recipe that calls for 15lbs. I realize that I can lose efficiency with this increase in grain, but what is the largest grain bill you guys have successfully used with BIAB? Any tips as to how I can increase my efficiency with these larger grain bills? Increase the mash time? Stir more?
Still a BIAB noob
Kenny

Re: Brew-in-a-Bag (BIAB) links
BIAB sculture is under way. All aluminum frame construction and collapsable. Question is how high should a lifting point be for a roller above the top of the pot? I am thinking 48" above the burner - do you think that is high enough? Maybe should be 54"? Perhaps best way to phrase the question is "What is the distance from the base of the grain bag to the knotted top of the bag?"

This link is dead. What calculators are folks using now?Chris Norrick wrote:http://www.gregstiffler.com/biabcalc/
Simple web calculator for determining BIAB total water volume and strike temp. Can also be used on a smart phone.

Beersmith can be used to determine volume and strike temp. Using Beersmith 1, add your recipe as usual, using a single infusiong, batch sparge mash profile. Take a look at the brewsheet, note the line that says, "Prepare XX.xx L water for brewing." Close the brewsheet, and in the mash profile, choose the Mash In step, and change "Water to add..." to the volume of water noted on the brewsheet.Michael Erwin wrote:This link is dead. I was looking for this the other day, and discovered they also have a smaller package for less than $5. So, if you don't need 6 or 7 bags...Dwayne_Delaney wrote:I bought my bag material at the Walmart in Henderson; something they call a Marjorie Voile Scarf, White, 59" X 216", should be enough for 6 or 7 bags for around $15.

I followed this method last night and it worked out perfectly. I'm guessing with other software packages you can do a similar work-around.Michael Erwin wrote:Beersmith can be used to determine volume and strike temp. Re: Brew-in-a-Bag (BIAB) links
I have gotten a couple bags made by a caregiver friend of Maryann. These will need to be tested but look good (they also have a drawstring installed).
Interesting thought as well as she made a sample bag from "muslin" material as another sample. Will bring them to meeting.
Note: the amberjacks and bonefish are biting big here on the beach in Exuma, Bahamas!

Re: Brew-in-a-Bag (BIAB) links
I just ordered a luggage scale that is on sale at buy.com today and thought I would post a link if anyone else is interested. Seems like a good buy at 9 bucks.

I'll start weighing my spent grains (and my baby, according to my wife) once I get this puppy.

I bought the Viole material at the westside walmart for less than 5 bucks. My wife sewed the edges togather to form a bag that fits a 60qt pot perfectly.
