WTB : 48qt cooler with drain hole

Post by ArtCox » Sun Mar 06, 2011 1:01 pm

Anyone got an old 48qt cooler with the drain hole. I have been to Wal-Mart, Lowe's and Rural King with no luck. I am wanting to make a Mash Tun out of it for my all grain setup.

Hay,better idea...last time I was at rural king on Morgan Avenue they had a ten gallon water cooler.I used a 48 quart cooler for a while and although it worked well and was fairly efficient,it has some configuration problems due to it's shape. It isn't adequately insulated,it's cumbersome and takes up a lot of space in the brew area,if it's not fairly level the dead space is hard to predict, etc, etc.I use my 30 qt.brew kettle now w/drain valve. It has some head space issues on some mash schedules but I work around it ok.If I were to use a cooler again it would have to be the 10 gal. water can.

Also,as a point of interest,if you want a very good braided strainer, use a 3/4" braided, flexible water heater connector. It's much bigger and more durable than the skinny ones I see most the time.

Just My Two Cents...good luck.
You gonna stop whinin' 'bout that beer,or you gonna send it to me?

I used a 10 gal round Gott cool for years, until I went to a converted 1/2 keg.
I started out with the braided hose (dishwasher line) then, as I had the money, went to a false bottom.

The only problem I had with the 10 gallon cooler was when I had 25# or more of grain, it would put a lot of weight on the bottom and I had some sparging problems.

I still use my round cooled a lot for small batches, 10-15 pounds of grain.
With the false bottom and my mill adjusted I would get close to 80 - 85 % efficiency quite often.

I was at Rural King on E. Morgan Avenue in Evansville,IN. today and saw a 10 gallon water cooler there for ~ $46.00.These are ideal for a 10 gallon MLT.
