eBay Refractometer

Post by msjulian » Fri May 07, 2010 5:09 pm

After borrowing Don H's refractometer to brew the other day I decided that I had to have one. Looking around I found a company selling several different styles on eBay. They had an economy 0-32% ATC unit for $30.00 shipped with a 3 year warranty so I took the plunge. I got the unit in just in time to take it over to John's for the Big Brew Day and try it out on several different beer styles and colors. It seemed to work very nicely except for the blue color was a little light and a little hard to make out but readable. I was little disappointed but I figured for $30 you get what you pay for. After some thought, I gave the company a call just to see if this was normal. The rep said "absolutely not" and in an instant he told me that he would ship a new one out today n/c (and upgrade to the HD unit) and send a call tag to pick up the other unit. I was floored at the customer service.

So now to the reason for this long drawn out story...His only condition was that had to tell everyone that I knew that might be in the market for a refractometer this little story in hopes that it might influence someone to buy from his company.

His eBay store link is
http://stores.ebay.com/National-Industrial-Supply

So I have held up to my end of the bargain...seriously though if you are in the market for a refactometer give his store a visit and see what you think.

Thanks for reading..

I've found that different light condiions results in different degrees of seperation between the blue and white. Best case is when you stand in a more dimly lit area, with the refractometer aimed at a better light source, or place your finger over half of the slide. I would almost bet your original is just fine. I know we compared readings during big brew, and we had slightly different readings, but, letting mine set for a few minutes, it came closer to what your readings were. Close enough to call them the same. .002 SG really makes no difference. No one could taste the difference.
I got my refractometer from eBay as well. Sounds like this is a first class buisness. Let me know who it is. I'll order one for a gift.
You gonna buy one, or be one?
.....I'm gonna be one!

I bought one a few months ago from this same company. Price was about $30. Free shipping, works great, good value!
