$1000 toaste4r oven
My wife conned me into buying her a Sous Vide, this nifty little device will keep liquid to within .2 of a degree. Am I thinking Ronco "set it and forget it" hell yes seems like the perfect device for a mini mash. Just wondering if anybody has used one before and any advice. thanks in advance Tim

Re: $1000 toaste4r oven
Had to do some research but finally found out what a SousVide is.
I'm not really sure how this would work as a mash tun, or did I miss read the question?
A Ranco controller (which I use for my RIMS, Fermenter, kegerator and a spare) controls a electrical devices 110v - 240v AC. I do use my at a 1 deg differential in my mash tun, it is settable from 1 to 5 deg. differential.

Sous-vide (pronounced /su ˈvid/) French for "under vacuum", is a method of cooking that is intended to maintain the integrity of ingredients by heating them for an extended period at relatively low temperatures. Food is cooked for a long time, sometimes well over 24 hours. Unlike cooking in a slow cooker, sous-vide cooking uses airtight plastic bags placed in hot water well below boiling point (usually around 60°C or 140°F).

the ronco was in jest, I was thinking I could add 2.5 gal water and grains set the temp and timer and walk away and have no concerns about the temp rising and falling. Like I said early the beauty of this device it's keeps the liquid to within .2 of a degree from the set temp.

Does it have a spout at the bottom? That might be key. Otherwise I think it would be tough to recirculate and set the mash bed for runoff. Well, you could use a grain bag and then siphon but you'll get a lot of the fine flour particles. I love brewing gadgets, so I say go for it!

A happy wife with her toys leaves you the hell alone to brew. Don't try to use her oven for brewing any more than use her stove for brewing. Get your own and you won't get any comaints if it gets mucked up.reidi_tim wrote:My wife conned me into buying her a Sous Vide
Sounds like you have a brewing equipment upgrade in your future!
You gonna buy one, or be one?

First off, that is super cool - is she into molecular gastronomy and all that?
Is this the kind with the immersion circulator ? Might not be the greatest mash tun because of what Chris mentioned about running off - although a 5gal. paint bag might be something you can use. I can see this as a great HERMS/RIMS type of device where you run your mash off and through a copper coil that sits in the water bath via pump.
Now, here's the question, has she hit you up for the super vacuum sealer yet?

yes vacuum sealer, was the first con, "but honey we can seal our food abd it will stay fresher" Little did I know it was all a set up. And John she has started brewing so that takes away a lot of complaints about me using her kitchen

tried it today in a mini mash, grains kept at 160 for 45 min. love it went to Lowes while it was going. The final wort was almost like syrup yes I think I did my best starch to sugar conversion. I am use to my og being low because of the purity of water I use but this time it came out high.A couple of weeks will see the final product
