History of Beer

Beer is one of the oldest beverages humans have produced, dating back to at least the 5th millennium BC and recorded in the written history of Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Etymology

Of the two terms, beer and ale, the latter is the older in English. It is believed to come directly from the proto-Indo European root *alu-, through Germanic *alu

If anyone ever comes across any books, written between 500 and 1500 a.d. that references the brewing/consumption of beer, or recipies, could you please forward me the book reference? Thanks!

Felllers. More proof that in this day and age of increasing globalization and chicanery, you can only trust your local home brewer. Or the well trod microbrewery. Somewhere an Irishman is rotating rapidly in his eternal slumber.

I'm not sure how long ago this article came out, but it's a good read. http://health.msn.com/nutrition/article ... &GT1=31036 made me thirsty as well.

For all the bottlers out there. See if you can match that bottle without the label to the beer!

I only scored a 7. I guess I haven't been drinking the bad beers of the world in a while.

Looks like the hop shortage might be a little better. The Czech report estimates hop production for 2008 will be a new record. http://www.praguemonitor.com/en/396/cze ... ess/26531/

Looks like Indiana Breweries took 3 medals total from all 91 categories.
Three Floyd's Dreadnaught - bronze
Three Floyd's Behemoth - gold
Upland's Winter Warmer - silver
Just proves there's more than corn in Indiana!

Some of this is not so scientific but it's still an interesting way to spend an hour, cuz it's about beer!

I'm not done with this paper and don't have my bibliography on it yet, but if anyone would be interested in the information or interested in reading it to give me some feedback for improvements, I'd love to hear what you think. It's a brief history on beer into the middle ages for my SCA group, when I enter beer into competitions.
