Beer is one of the oldest beverages humans have produced, dating back to at least the 5th millennium BC and recorded in the written history of Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.
Etymology
Of the two terms, beer and ale, the latter is the older in English. It is believed to come directly from the proto-Indo European root *alu-, through Germanic *alu

I'm not done with this paper and don't have my bibliography on it yet, but if anyone would be interested in the information or interested in reading it to give me some feedback for improvements, I'd love to hear what you think. It's a brief history on beer into the middle ages for my SCA group, when I enter beer into competitions.
