Iron Brewer Challenge

Post by Chris Alvey » Sat May 27, 2006 4:31 am

I had an idea for a fun activity/contest based on the Iron Chef tv show idea. We could have someone (The Chairman) select a Secret Ingredient before a club meeting. This could be anything signifigant really - a hop variety like Cascade or Hallertau... Or a yeast strain like Belgian or Wit or Hefe or US-56... Or a grain like Black patent or Chocolate or Wheat ... or an adjunct like honey or a fruit.

The challenge would be that, once the Chairman unveils the secret ingredient, all of the brewers participating would need to formulate and submit their recipe by the end of the meeting using the secret ingredient. People could discuss various recipe ideas throughout the meeting before finalizing their recipe. They would then go home, purchase ingredients, brew up the recipe (no cheating now), and have the final product ready to bring back maybe a couple of meetings later. The beers could be judged on taste, appearance, and use of the secret ingredient and a 'winner' could be chosen.

I would be willing to post all the recipes on the forum here, and people could keep a thread updated with progress, etc.

What do you all think about trying this at the upcoming meeting ?
