Adding motor to Buckeye Cider Press

Post by mdolshan » Wed May 13, 2009 6:38 am

Hi,

I just watched the OVHA Youtube video on pressing cider. It was great!

I'm about to pick up a nearly identical cider press, i.e., an Improved Buckeye model. I'm considering modifying it with an electric motor.

I'd be very interested to find out some details about the motor I saw in the Youtube video. In particular, speed, power, etc.

Could someone please put me in touch with the owner of the cider press?

I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Matthew (in Baltimore, MD)

One thing that was not mentioned on the posts, and I appologize greatly, was that all of the cider that we fermented from the press had a distinct metallic flavor after fermentation was complete. The cider pre-fermentation was some of the best cider that I have ever tasted, but everything that was fermented tasted like iron. We could only conclude that the flavor was a result of the apples being in contact with the cast iron components of the grinder. We would like to try again this year, perhaps with a grinder made from a garbage disposal.

If you want to talk to the owner of the press, PM Dutch. His hobby is rebuilding these presses and he knows them well.

Hi Dwayne,

Thank you very much for this! I'll get in touch with Dutch.

I'll also do some research into that metallic taste you're describing. Perhaps there's a way to seal the cast-iron, if it is indeed the culprit.

Best,

Matthew
