Post by Dwayne_Delaney » Tue May 20, 2008 9:24 pm

Sorry, I thought that someone had already posted the information and the link.

Link: www.brewerscup.org

Information:
Entries accepted from June 14th through June 28th
Judging on Friday, July 11th and Saturday, July 12th
The Brewers Cup announces several changes for the 2008 competition:

Homebrewer of the Year Award recognizes brewers who prove their brewing expertise by earning the most points at the Brewers Cup.
What is going to take to win this award? Expertise in several styles and lots of brewing! Winners will receive 3 points for first place, 2 for second and 1 for third place with a bonus of 5 points for best of show. The winner will receive a trophy and a beautiful 15 gallon Blichmann Boilermaker pot! The mill has it that prolific brewers, Bill Ballinger, Mike Pearson and Mark Schiess are revving up their brew pots!

The formula for Indiana Homebrew Club of the Year has been changed to a simpler formula. Club members must declare their club affiliation on their entry forms. The club with the most points will have bragging rights for a year and have the club name added to the Homebrew Club of the Year Trophy.

Point Formula for the Indiana Homebrew Club of the Year:

* 5 points for Best of Show
* 3 points for first place
* 2 points for second place
* 1 point for first place

I was reading through the rules in the Homebrewer section and I have a question about part of #4.

4. Each entry must consist of 3 bottles, 12 ounce...............................
and must be completely free of paper labels, raised-glass, and/or inked brand-name lettering. ...................

My question is what do they mean by raised-glass?

A lot of my beers are bottles in old Samuel Adams bottles and it has their Logo on the bottle in raised letters.

Do I have to re-bottle my beer to enter it?

Thanks
Don

Don,I think the rules must be pretty rigid about raised glass. I was a steward last year at the competition and I don't remember seeing ANY bottles w/any thing other than plain glass.

Thats what I need to know. Now I have to transfer some beer and in the future make sure I keep several in the plain bottles and drink the others.

Thanks

We have had bottles with raised letters before. We were told to note it on the form, but the beer was not disqualified.

To be sure, rebottle if it is not too much trouble.i

I still have some in the keg so it won't be a problem for my Bitter and Lager, but I have a Oktoberfest that is 8 month old and a Bavarian HefeWeizen that is 5+ month in the bottle and the kegs are empty.
I'm afraid, if I rebottle, I will, loose the carbonation in the Oktoberfest and loose the settled yeast in my Bavarian HefeWeizen.

When I dropped off the beers at Great Fermentations in Indy Saturday, the guy that took the beers made a point of asking if any of the bottles had "raised lettering like Sam Adams" and said that it would disqualify the beer.

Brewers Cup LogoLiz Laughlin's Kolsch
2007 Pro Best of Show

Liz Laughlin, brewmaster at Rock Bottom College Park in Indianapolis won the 2007 Indiana State Fair Brewers Cup Best of Show, surprisingly with a Kolsch. It was surprising even to Liz because pale, delicate styles like Kolsch usually get swept aside early in the Best of Show round of judging in favor of bigger more robust styles. In fact Liz knows as well as anyone because in 1998 she won Best of Show in an Oregon competition as a homebrewer with a Barleywine.

Originally from Cape Cod, Liz attended college across the country at the University of Oregon ("Go Ducks!") majoring in Environmental studies. She was inspired to brew by discovering her brothers old brewing equipment in the garage, finding a "moldy copy of Charlie Papazian's Complete Joy of Homebrewing and after that I was hooked". She immersed herself into the Oregon homebrewing community, became BJCP qualified, and started hanging around Steelhead Brewing in Eugene asking questions and picking the brain of Jamie Floyd, then Steelhead's brewer. An assistant brewers position later opened up and she was hired, starting her on her professional journey. Later she was hired at the Portland Rock Bottom and worked under Van Havig. She states, "I learned a whole lot from those two guys, especially being picky about cleanliness in the brewery". In fact, the pixyish Liz feels her petite size helps her keep her brewery meticulously clean, because she can easily get under the vessels and she even climbs inside the brew kettle to clean it.

Self proclaimed "artsy", she loves the "art and science of brewing", enjoying the challenge of brewing the complete gamut of styles. Her brewing "inspiration" is Tonya Cornett, at Bend Brewing in Bend, OR (a Marion, IN native who started her brewing career at Oaken Barrel in Greenwood, IN) who was recently named Small Brewery Brewer of the Year by Draft Magazine. Liz loves to play golf and enjoys other outdoor sports like snowboarding and fly fishing. Since she has been a 'Hoosier' she has become Colts fan.

Liz's 2008 Kolsch has already been brewed and will go on tap July 10th. It will also be on tap at the Awards Reception at the Brewers Cup.

For the first time in about 4 years, I won't be able to make the event (dammit). Is anyone from the club going up there so that they can bring back our homebrew club of the year award?

I was just on Brewercup.org looking for info on the traditional awards banquet as I wanted to invite my uncle. I seen this:
Beer Dinner Saturday Evening

We are planning a beer dinner for Saturday evening to give judges, stewards and entrants a location to meet after the competition. Stay tuned for more details.
I'm not sure what this means.

I assume this is the usual reception held after the judging in the same building.

We had five members attend the judging and awards ceremony this year. Jim Dipple, John Dipple, Dwayne Delaney, Jack Frey, and myself. All of us were stewards except for Jack who judged. We all worked all three sessions, one Friday night and two on Saturday.

Entries were way up this year. A 20-something percent increase over last year. Well over 800 entries. It kept the stewards very busy pulling, sorting, and delivering all those beers.

At the awards ceremony Saturday night, Dwayne took a third place for a ...crap I can't remember, you'll have to fill it in Dwayne; and Jack took a first for the schwartzbier Blacklight! Way to go! Give these guys a hand! :beer2 :beer2

Everyone should consider heading up next year. It's a really great time.
