Barleywine - blowoff hose = BIG mess

Post by Dwayne_Delaney » Mon Feb 13, 2006 5:04 pm

The subject says it all. You would think that I would know better......

I pitched my yeast last night and noticed this morning that the krausen was getting close to the airlock already. I didn't have a blow off hose, so I put the carboy in the sink and loosened the stopper so that it would take very little pressure to push it out. I then left for work. This afternoon, my wife heard a noise and discovered the airlock in the sink. She then shoved it into the neck of the carboy real tight to prevent this from happening again. When I got home this evening, hops had clogged the airlock letting the pressure build and then release all at once, spraying wort and hops all over the ceiling, walls, cabinets, everything. I'll be purchasing a blow off hose in the near future. Doh!!
