Complete and total newbie with dumb questions

Post by berickso » Fri Jul 06, 2007 11:05 am

Morning, all. I stumbled upon this website because I'm interested in learning to homebrew, but am beginning with basically no knowledge, just an unhealthy appreciation for beer... :D

I read through all the previous posts, but I was wondering where here in Evansville do you find starter equipment? Do you have to get everything online, or is there a more convenient place to go?

Thanks for your help...
Brian

There is a co-op store on St. Joe that I just found out about myself. It has basic necessities and I believe the nice fella there would probably order anything you might also need, which he might not have. If you were coming from Diamond, it is North a couple miles on the right. Let us know how you did and if you have any questions. Good luck.

The Co-Op on Mill Rd & St. Joe can get just about any ingredient you need and they stock some equipment. Al that runs the beer/wine dept had a heart attack a couple of weeks ago but has been back in and out of the shop this week. They should be caught up on inventory soon. They only down-side is their hours. They close at 5 pm during the week and 12 noon on Saturday. Closed sunday. Oh, and they don't store their hops in the cooler

There are a couple of semi-close on-line retailers that have just about everything and shipping is fast. http://www.midwestsupplies.com and http://www.northernbrewer.com They both have print catalogs they will send you.

I would advise you to check out http://www.howtobrew.com from John Palmer. This is the first edition of his book posted online for free! I would also pick up the current 3rd edition in print as he's made a lot of improvements over the years.

If you're going to use malt extract for your first brews, look into the "exract late" method in the boil.

You might look into getting an outdoor propane turkey fryer with pot. Most of us get kicked out of the kitchen pretty quick ;-)

Welcome to the hobby and we hope to see you at the next regular meeting on September 26. Several of us will also be at the SWIRCA Craftbrewers Fest on August 18 and the Museum Brew-Ha-Ha in September, pouring our finest. Stop by and say hello. We'll be in the bright orange shirts.
