I was planning to weld a 2 x 1/2" SS pipe nipple into my keggle rather than a coupler, since the ball valve is female anyway. Any suggestions before I make it permanent?

I would still go with a coupler and a male adapter. They are really cheap at Evansville plumbing supply. Most common ball valves are female. You just never know when you will re-work your system and want to put something else in the place of the ball valve.

Since I'm not actually welding the valve itself to the nipple, I can always remove it and adapt the pipe back to female with a coupler, to serve the same purpose as the male-male adapter would be doing if i welded in a coupler. My theory was one less external joint.

Now that I've used tri clover fittings, that would be the way to go. Possibly a little more expensive (I haven't compared prices) but $5 seems a fair price for a stainless fitting.

They are easy to clean, quick connections/disconnections, universal sizing. Last forever.

After looking into it a little further, I realized the main con to welding in a pipe nipple would be the threads exposed to potential damage. The tri clovers do look appealing.
