As I said to Chris the other day, if I had known about BIAB, I may have skipped extract altogether. Very economical, and gives you all the mash controls, or at least, the most important ones, like grain bill and mash temp.

For anyone wanting to make a big bag for their pot:
JoAnn Fabric off of Green River Rd has the recommended fabric on sale 50% off. It's in the curtain section which has ever thing in horizontal rolls in tall racks. It is labeled White Solid Voile, 100% polyester. 54" wide and the sale price is $4.49 a yard. One yard will make a bag big enough for a converted keg kettle with the 54" being the circumference and 36" tall. That leaves plenty to bring over the top to drape down and secure.
I believe the Wal-Mart's in Evansville no longer carry any fabric, but I've not been in them for awhile.
After looking at the one I made, which looks like a pillowcase, I would probably taper the bag toward the bottom to help remove it when full of wet grain, especially if I do a 10 gallon batch. I'm wondering how hard it is going to be to get the full bag out the reduced hole in the top of the keg. I have a pretty big inset on my converted boil kettle. It was a big a hole I could get with my angle grinder. Tapered would probably be better but I'll give this a shot Saturday and see how it goes.

I bought my bag material at the Walmart in Henderson; something they call a Marjorie Voile Scarf, White, 59" X 216", should be enough for 6 or 7 bags for around $15.

Was that in a fabric section of the store or is that like a packaged item in houseware? Sounds like a better deal!
Joann: $0.33 sq ft on sale
Walmart: $0.17 sq ft all the time

It was packaged with the curtain stuff. It is finished around the edges and is meant to be used as is.

I'm not sure whether to be intrigued or embarrassed. Did that come with a McCall's pattern?

I'm bumping this back to the top. The May Tech Topic is Accelerated All-Grain using BIAB and this post has good info. Ask questions below that can be answered at the meeting presentation.

For those that lack sewing skills, you can BUY custom sized BIAB Bags from this site. It's french seamed so should be of good quality.

BIAB brewers,
Can you start weighing your spent grain bag and figure out the water absorption rate? Quarts/lb are the normal units. Also add if you squeeze or just let it drip.
Thanks,
