The category for this year's Big turkey contest is weizen/weissbier which is BJCP category 15A. The contest will take place at the November meeting, so anyone interested in entering has about 2 months to brew the prize winning entry.
There was some discussion at the last meeting whether dunkelweizen would be appropriate for entry in the contest. After looking at the minutes from the board meeting regarding the contest, dunkel would be entered in another category (15B) and would not be eligible for entry. The contest is for Hefeweizen style beers only.

I thought that the contest was for all of style 15, just like our contest last year, when we used all of style 12 Porters. Why not include 15A,B,C,D to make it more interesting?? To me, the contest would be pretty boring with the inclusion of Hefes only.

Using style 15A wasn't to make the contest boring, but allow all entries being judged to the same guidelines. Last year's contest while including 12A, B, & C. Also allowed any variation of which categories 20, 21, 22, and 23 could be included. Many of which only category 22, and 23 were included (smoked, oaked, and burbon).

Would I like a different category...Yes. Prior to this past year I really disliked the Hef style. Now I can tolerate the beers in limited session. But yet a style I can appreciate to guidelines.

Lets open up the polls for next year's Big Turkey category. What should next year's, 2011, Big Turkey beer be?

The reason why we chose 10A was because of the wide-open nature of the style, which allowed a lot of variations in the entries; the same reason why we chose to use the entire porter style last year. 15A allows no such variations........boring.

I like the idea of an open discussion of the choice of style for next years contest well in advance of the contest.

Somehow I got the wrong message, probably wasn't listening well. So, when I purchased ingredients for the next several months, I got stuff to make a weizenbock. Anyway, that's what I'm making, so I won't be in the contest.

I feel your pain, I have a dunkel in my fermenter.
But, it won't go to waste.

Update for anyone not at last nights meeting.

The Big Turkey contest has been expanded from category 15A only, to now also include categories 15B, & 15C. Now the contest includes all the German Wheat beers. Weizen, Dunkelweizen, and Weizenbock. 15D is still not included in the contest, as it uses rye.

What the hell am I supposed to do with my sprittenbock? I thought we said yes to sprittenbock?

I should have just kept my mouth shut ...

The Alvey/Weber effort is in the fermenter. As usual, the Hefeweizen curse continues.

120 Minute Mash - intentional, no - done, yep.
Decoction - oh, not on purpose, but had to do it because missed strike temp.
Batch Sparge - not today friend, try a 1hour+ old-skool fly sparge. What sparge arm you might ask? Oh, that would be a showerhead coupled to the mash tun with some clear tubing.
Gas run out during boil - check.
Starter used - heck no, forgot.

Should be stellar.

Sounds like a winning brew!

Not only have I made one, but we drank it all within that week too. 7 Day Blonde. It was the ale version of Busch Light, so it's pretty much like water anyway, but an award winning hef, I don't think is possible.....unless there are only 3 entries, and the other 2 are assliquor.
