Not sure about winemakers in the group?
There is a NEW vineyard on Koressel Road just north of Marx road. I DO NOT believe it is a winery or connected to any other winery in the area. There is a simple sign that says grapes are available. I don't know how many, what variety or how much they want for them?
If there is any interest, I will go by tomorrow and see what i can find out.

I'm always very interested in hearing about local fruits that become available!!! :)

If you hear about varieties or anything like that, very curious to know. Thanks!

That is my normal route home from work, except I turn at Marx so I've not seen it. I'll try to remember to keep heading North on Monday and I'll see what I can find out.

I will try to remember to stop on on Monday, I drive right past as well three days a week.

I've seen the vines for the last couple years, wondered what was up there.

Spoke to Alan Ripplemeier [owner]
Here is info:
He has Steuben, Chaumbourcin, Cynthiana, Cayuga White, Niagra White, Catawba and Concord grapes. @ $0.75/ lb or $0.60 / lb you pick Seems to me that he indicated that there should be a minimum of 1000 lbs each on the vines.
First grapes Steuben and Chaumbourcin should be ready in about 2-3 weeks.
anyone can call 319-3951 or we can order as a group and maybe have a pickin party? He said he would keep me updated on grapes progress and brix.

As an afterthought I do believe that we could use my press for the grapes. Not sure if they actually need to be crushed first? Could they go through the grinder?
Press directly? Back in Jersey we just put them in the bathtub and jumped!

The best piece of equipment you can have at the primary stage is a crusher that removes the stems and opens the skins. Typically you press after the fruit is being removed.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmeeeeee too. We sort of grew up on Catawba, concord and Niagra wine.
Funny, on my way home today I got a call from Maryann saying that while she was jogging she saw someone moving and they had a small chest freezer on their lawn. I stopped by and got a 9 cu ft for 20$. I guess I'm ready for about anything as i now have 2 converted freezers!!

Count me in.

Can't be Chambourcin ready, though -- mine are just entering veriason, won't be ripe for 8 more weeks. Hell, my Concords aren't fully in veriason yet!

Defintely interested in the Cynthiana though -- I'm thinking of buying some more vines myself, and those are on the list.

Note that you need about 20 lbs for a gallon of wine.

Missed the post on crushing -- white are normally pressed immediately after crushing and de-stemming (with lots of sodium sulfite added). Reds are usually pressed after primary fermentation.

If we want to do a big batch, we will need a large fermenter for the reds -- whites can be crushed, pressed, mixed, and portioned out directly.

I wonder how a fruity beer would turn out with red grapes as the fruity?

 When do we pick?
