Master/Slave freezer fermenter.

Post by Dutch » Tue Jun 07, 2011 8:06 am

I recently bought a large home chest freezer to replace our older 12 CU FT unit. I converted the old unit by removing the lid and adding a vetical sidewall extension of about seven inches. I did the same thing to a dead freezer of about the same size directly next to it. I then added two four-inch ducts between the two [in the adjacent wooden side wall extensions] and have two small muffin fans circulating air through the ducts when required by the temperature controller for the slave unit..
One Ranco controller runs the operating freezer/fermenter and a second Ranco controller operated the small fans to control temperature in the slave freezer. Pictures to follow.
With the added height I think I can ferment eight batches simotain!
COME ON CIDER AND WINE SEASON!!!
Pictures to follow!

In response to a number of questions at the meeting Wednesday here are some photos of the 6-Batch fermenter.
The unit on left is an operating freezer controlled by a RANCO controller. The unit on the right is cooled only by two muffin fans circulating air from the operationsal unit to the inopeable unit. The fans are powered by an old computer power suply whihc is in turn controlled by the second RANCO controller. The slave unit has an independent RANCO controller. The only proviso is that the operating side be cooler than the slave unit. Works fine! There is a good seal and the original lidswere re-used. And, YES they are soda taps and they work just fine as I can serve on the left and ferment on the right.

Last words heard from behind Dutch's closed garage door, "Danger Will Robinson! Danger Will Robinson!"
You gonna buy one, or be one?
