With a score that high, I am sure you went to the second round. In the second round the head judge of each 1st round flight retaste all of the top beers from the first flight & decide the first, second & third place beers. They assign a score to the top three based on the final placement. It is possible a lower scoring beer from round 1 will be judged in the second round to be the better beer and reassigned a higher score. In theory, the panel of judges in the second round are more experienced than the first round panel of judges. The best of show round works just like the second round but is only made up of the gold medal winners in all categories. The best of show judges are the most quallified of all the judges.
That is why you send 3 bottles. Every beer is judged in round 1. The 2nd & 3rd bottles are only needed for the beers that advance to round 2 and best of show. All of the extra bottles are given to the stewards to thank them for working. No gold medal winners are left over for the stewards.
It is a shame that your beer scored that high & didn't place in the top 3. I'm sorry I didn't get to judge any of those flights. The highest beer I judged all weekend was a 43. It finished in first place. It was also the only beer that scored above 40 in the 3 flights I tasted. All of the categories I judged had 3 or 4 flights in the 1st round.

Re: 2009 Brewer's Cup stewards
Thanks all I appreciate the info. Confusing to me a bit but as long as it works out in the end. I know it must take a lot thought and effort to coordinate such an event. I was really happy getting the sheets back and they were nicely written.
