New lower hop prices @ Hopsdirect!!

Post by Dwayne_Delaney » Mon May 04, 2009 6:51 pm

Check out these prices. I bought some Magnums a couple of weeks ago from them and I thought their shipping ($7.95 for a pound) was a little high. Also, you won't know your shipping costs until you receive your invoice. But, you can't beat these prices;still not as good as they were in 2007, but not too bad.

Willamettes @ $10.50 a pound!!

After Jack's warning, I double checked this site and they are still offering German imported Hallertau for 17.50 a lb.!!!!

I'm stocked up now to be safe. If you like Hallertau, I'd consider this while you can. I bet prices will be changing and I have yet to see a site beat these prices.

Do hops store well in the freezer? If so, for how long?

Many belgian brewers actually prefer aged, oxidized hops to gain the preservative with less bitterness. That said, I store mine in vacuum seal bags in the freezer. :)

FYI, I ordered four pounds of hops and the actual shipping cost via UPS Ground was $13.15. Shipping via UPS Ground is about a week.

UPS ground can sometimes make it in 2 days and I've had real good luck with that from this outfit. You bought too many hops. I'll look through them for you and take the ones you don't need.

Also, something to consider is that hops store better in a non-frost free freezer. If they freeze and thaw repeatedly they age much quicker and thus lose their alpha acid content much quicker. So obviously, putting them in a non-frost free freezer is the best way to store them; however, if that's not an option put ice in a container....then put your hops over the ice...then put more ice over the hops. That way your hops won't thaw out when your newer freezer goes through it's frost free cycle.

I've never ordered from this site, but they starting advertising on The Brewing Network lately. It looks like their prices might be a little higher, but they have a flat rate shipping of $5. Also, you can order 5lbs and 11lbs at once. It might be something to consider to buy as a group and split up amongst the gang? Oh yeah, the site is http://www.nikobrew.com/
