Anybody send any beers to the National Homebrew Competition?
I sent a Belgian Dark Strong Ale and an Oatmeal Stout. Had some trouble with the shipping companies. I finally shipped my "glassware" via UPS.

I actually went to a box/shipping outlet that used DHL and asked the owner if DHL would ship beer. (I also had read somewhere that DHL would ship beer without a hassle.) He said that only companies that have an special agreement with the shipper can ship alcohol and then an adult signature is required when it is delivered.

Here are the results from the first round of the National Homebrew Competition.

Sadly, the only name I recognized was Foamblower Mark Schiess.
Oh well, there's always next year; besides, that's six beers that I don't have to ship off to the beer judges.

Got my score sheets back today. Kinda disappointed, but I got some good feedback from 3 out of 4 of the judges.
Curiously, the judge that gave me the lowest score offered the least feedback......
Dark Strong Belgian Ale - score: 27, 28
Both judges said that I needed more maltiness in the Belgian Ale. Based on the style guidelines I would have to agree with them. I have yet to taste a commercial example of this style though. If anyone sees any locally, let me know.
Oatmeal Stout - score - 28, 24
Both judges commented on a plastic off-flavor in the Oatmeal stout. I can't detect it myself, but I'll be the first to admit my unrefined palate.
I plan on rebrewing both with the suggestions from the judges next year.

Same here.
Best Bitter (8b) got a 25 and 26. One judge suggested I should have entered this a Prem Bitter 8c.
Scottish Export 80- (9c) got a 25 and 23. Also entered this in the "New Entrant" category. That bottle must have got infected as both judges commented on "latic problems" and I got a 19 and 17 on this. Same beer! Ouch!
All the comments say "GUSHERS". I used copper's drops with these. The ones at home have hardy any carbonation. Very strange. Oh well, most of it goes in the keg anyway. Think I'm going to stop bottle priming the extras and just fill up from the tap.

I believe Unibroue's Trois Pistoles would fit the category. They carry it at Quik Liquor.I have yet to taste a commercial example of this style though. If anyone sees any locally, let me know.
For everyone I haven't met, I used to live in Evansville and was a member of OVHA. After moving home to Jasper, and missing having good friends to brew with, I decided to try to start my own club. I am happy to say that I have been the president of the Dubois County Suds Club since 2006 (although I still miss my OVHA buddies)!

Picked up some of Unibroue's Trois Pistoles last night and just finished off the bottle. It is definitely much more malty and sweet than my attempt at a Strong Dark.
At 9% it also packs quite a wallop.
