Anybody tried ordering hops lately?

Post by Dwayne_Delaney » Mon Oct 29, 2007 9:36 pm

I had heard that the hop supply was going to be tight this year, but man it's getting scary. Most of the big online vendors are out of most all of the more popular hops, have jacked up the prices on their remaining inventory and have quit offering 1 pound quantities altogether. This could be an interesting brew year.

Hello All,

Been working all afternoon to try and figure out where we are in the world of hops. Everyday, I do try to find a few more that might be available and I do have some success, but must admit it isn't easy. For those of you on the Hopunion "Wish" list, there will be good news and bad news. The good news is that many of the requests can and will be filled. Bod news is not all of the varieties will be available. There is a short supply in the world and I will say other places in the world want our hops bad and are willing to do just about anything to get them. When we do call you regarding the wants do keep in mind that there are many substitutions that can be used. My main motto now is "Do you want hops in your beer or not". It does say a lot about the situation. Don't get too hung up on a variety if it is not available, but concentrate on what else can be used. Many are fairly close to each other and all hops do make beer! Meanwhile I do open a new door every day or so and this means a hop that is out today, might be available tomorrow. Some hops that are going to be hard to get would be Centennial, Chinook, Crystal, Horizon, Magnum, Liberty, Millenium Newport, Nugget, Palisade, Santiam, Simcoe, Warrior and WIllamette. Also others will have some degree of hope and some we are looking pretty good on. I am working on getting more Chinooks and maybe Nugget. They would be a good example of not here today, but maybe tomorrow. Going to have the girls start calling next week regarding the list. Call us if you are not already on it.

Europe is extremely tight, but have made a few deals this week and can do more. Problem is I am paying very high prices and this can make life difficult with me and my banker. For example I can buy some German Select and Tradition today, but the price will have to be around $15 per lb for me to get by. I am going to buy some, but you get the idea that spending this kind of money isn't easy. Anyway a little insight into my world. It is about 8:30PM and I am going home to eat, go to bed and then come back to work. Exciting life indeed!! Just remember, "There will be Hops"!

Cheers,

Ralph Olson

Yikes... I think i'm woozy.

I looked around (and ordered a bunch of hops.)

Best place right now : http://www.freshops.com/
Another Place : http://www.hopsdirect.com/

EDIT: Williams Brewing seems to have a good supply too and it looks like they haven't jacked up their prices (I wish I had looked here first) : http://www.williamsbrewing.com

I got 1/2# Willamette and Centennial from HopsDirect (Whole Hops) and 1# of Amarillo and Liberty from Freshops (Pellets, very thin selection.)

NorthernBrewer and B3's selections were just sad.

If you are motivated to order some, I think now would be a great time for us to set up an exchange program within the club.

On my last speciality grain order from Midwest Supplies (two weeks ago) I was going to get a pound of a few varieties for the coming year but I didn't want 2006 hops. I asked them when the 2007s would be in and was told "in about a month" so I held off to get the fresh ones. I should have ordered them even if they were from the 2006 crop because the selection is way down now just two weeks later! Prices are up too and range from $2-2.40 an ounce.

I just noticed this posted on their website: "Stay calm and have a homebrew."

Dear Midwest customers.

This letter is to inform you of the current situation of hop availability for the rest of 2007 and 2008. The hop harvest typically occurs during the middle of September. This year

These are the guys I was going to buy my rhizomes from. FWIW, I decided to try their fresh hops. The prices didn't seem that bad, 1.60 to 1.70 an ounce. I put in for over a pound of fuggle and Hallertau. I got a confirmation email back that the order was shipping with no mention of any problems. Shipping was a bit steep at 7 bucks.

Just another place to keep in mind if you are interested.

Hop prices have raised over 60% since January, 2007 & the limit hasn't been reached. I last paid $9.00 - $9.50 per pound for pellets. I buy 11 pound boxes. If a bunch of you want to split a box, I will try to get them for you.

Grain prices also are going up. My last order was about 10% higher. I will be ordering around the first of the year.
