To Brew or Not to Brew.... in #7 Plastic

Post by evilleadam » Sun Jun 03, 2012 9:57 pm

So I've been planning and preparing a nice cream ale for a summer party. A crisp, refreshing, easy drinking brew that will please even my BMC drinking friends. I've planned this even more than my previous brews (which I usually obsess over anyway). But, come brew day I realize the bottle I've borrowed to use as a primary is a #7 plastic water cooler jug (my one and only glass carboy is currently in use). I've heard some pretty bad things about using anything but PET or HDPE, and since it's such a light recipe I'm afraid of possible off flavors - or worse, leaching toxins!

Does anyone have any advise or has anyone used these before?

Thanks!

There's a lot of discussion about using water bottles, and a lot of differring opinions. Some people use water bottles, some don't, Unltimately it'll come down to your own choice.

Here's some of the other codes....and some info.

1. PET or PETE – Light gauge containers such as store bought pop bottles should be a one time use only. Heavier gauge containers show no evidence of leaching chemicals.

2. HDPE – not known to leach unwanted chemicals.

3. PVC or V – Bad – Strong evidence to show the leaching of DEHA, a known human carcinogen.

4. LDPE – not known to leach unwanted chemicals although not as widely recycled as #1 or #2.

5. PP – not known to leach unwanted chemicals although not as widely recycled as #1 or #2.

6. PS - suspected to possibly leach harmful carcinogens

7. Assorted but usually polycarbonate – Bad – may contain leaching BPA.

With all that info, there's a lot of people that use them and never have noticed an issue.

Thanks for the informative reply!

Yes, I've read many of those differing opinions. It seems there's always some way of doing things (outside of fermenting in an old boot) that some people have tried - even swear by. After much debate, I believe I'll go for it... at least for the primary. The glass carboy should be available by the time I'm ready to rack to secondary.

Thanks again!
